Clara Barton was born on December 25, 1821, in Oxford, Massachusetts. She became a teacher, worked in the U.S. Patent Office and was an independent nurse during the Civil War. While visiting Europe, she worked with a relief organization known as the International Red Cross, and lobbied for an American branch when she returned home. The American Red Cross was founded in 1881, and Barton served as its first president.

Clara Barton
loyal
caring

Setting: Washington pg. 88; Massachusetts pg. 88; United States pg. 96
Plot: Clara was a nurse who would treat soldiers from the war as she came back and forth with bandages, handkerchiefs, paper, pens and tobacco. Clara would read the Massachusetts newspaper and wrote letters for them when they couldn't. Then Clara came with bigger and more effective stuff to treat the men with better care. She came with linens, blankets, preserved food and liquors and a bunch of other stuff. The people were grateful towards her. Many soldiers heard about her and called her "The Angel of the Battlefield." Clara became famous for it, but she went to Europe to take a break. Then she across a organization called the Red Cross. It was to help treat soldiers--picking no sides--from the war. All the countries, but the United States, joined this organization. Clara was shocked at this and went to the United States to convince them to join. They finally joined after her persuasion. People relied on them, but they were mostly more grateful towards Clara Barton, who got the U.S. to join.
